How Smash Bracket determines outliers
The following guidelines are what Smash Bracket uses for determining outliers:
If some feat makes the majority of a character’s feats feel like anti feats, it is an outlier.
To determine that a feat isn’t an outlier, there needs to be other feats around the same level or statements confirming that it is within the realm of possibility for a character. We can also look at feats that other comparable characters have performed to help establish what is possible here.
We don’t try to establish what seems possible for a character based on our own logic. We use stated levels of power and other feats to establish what is possible.
An entire source (game/manga/anime/etc) is able to be an outlier. For this to happen, it must have no explanation for the increase in power and have sources taking place after it where the character is back at their normal levels of power without explanation.
Infinite stats are always an outlier unless the character has zero examples of them demonstrating less than an infinite value in that stat
It is easy to think of excuses for why a character isn’t normally operating at the level of their outliers, but unless a mainline source explicitly states that reason, it doesn’t count for justifying outliers.
This is specifically meant to rule out theories about a character. It’s not unusual for a character to try harder when they are in more danger or facing stronger enemies; these kinds of reasons don’t need explicit confirmation. It is meant to prevent arguments like “Sonic never runs fast, even when he’s in danger, because it would bother people’s ears with sonic booms.”
If a feat directly contradicts the established lore of a character, it can be considered an outlier even if there’s nothing saying it is numerically out of line.
Similarly, it is important to be aware of the context and presentation of a feat. Leniency should be granted to feats with a strong explanation for the sudden increase in power (like pushing past limits). Likewise, we should be more strict with feats that are presented as a joke.
Abilities can be considered outliers if they are presented out-of-line with how the character normally behaves.
